More Awards Success For AMCO At CIHT Scotland

Hard on the heels of its success at the 2016 National Rail Awards AMCO Rail has landed another prestigious industry accolade, this time from the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) in Scotland.

The CIHT awarded AMCO Rail the Breedon Environmental Award 2016 for the works it undertook to improve Wamphray culvert on the West Coast Mainline

The existing culvert presented a barrier to migrating fish trying to reach spawning grounds further upstream and during times of heavy rainfall the culvert was unable to deal with the volume of water being encountered, this was impacting on the railway embankment where scour erosion was observed.

AMCO were engaged by Network Rail and devised an alternative solution which utilised the existing culvert as the overflow channel and then constructed a new river channel which included a box culvert detail under the railway, a pre-cast downstream channel using U shaped channel units and an insitu concrete river channel upstream of the works.

The project has significantly increased the capacity of water that can now flow under the West Coast Main Line which has reduced the chance of flood water impacting on the local residents. The new fish pass has also opened up a significant amount of new spawning habitat for the migratory fish.

Judges were impressed by the wide range of environmental benefits achieved in a hard engineering scheme which was implemented with minimal disruption to main line rail travellers
