Wamphray Culvert Refurbishment & Upgrade
Works have been successfully completed on the Wamphray Culvert upgrade programme.
The existing culvert presented a barrier to migrating fish trying to reach spawning grounds further upstream and during times of heavy rainfall the culvert was unable to deal with the volume of water being encountered, this was impacting on the railway embankment supporting the West Coast Mainline (WCML) where scour erosion was observed.
Network Rail engaged AMCO to undertake the upgrade works, AMCO working in collaboration with the River Annan Trust and Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) devised an alternative scheme which utilised the existing Wamphray Culvert as the overflow channel and then constructed a new river channel which included a box culvert detail under the WCML, a pre-cast downstream channel using U shaped channel units and an insitu concrete river channel upstream of the works.
The project has significantly increased the capacity of water that can now flow under the WCML which has reduced the chance of flood water impacting on the local residents. The new fish pass has also opened up a significant amount of new spawning habitat for the migratory fish.
